What you need to know about credit cards

Credit cards allow you to "buy goods now and pay later". They aren´t linked to your bank account. Like debit cards, they can be used to buy goods in shops over the telephone and Internet. We, at Fameo, accept Visa, MasterCard/EuroCard, JCB and American Express credit cards.

When you place an order with us, we contact your credit card's issuing bank to confirm that your credit card is valid, registered to the billing address you provided, has enough funds to cover your purchase and has not been reported as lost or stolen. This authorization process takes between 10 to 60 seconds. Using your credit card to make purchases via our website is a secure way to pay for your order and as safe as paying through a teller in a high street shop. There are a number of security steps in place to give you total confidence when dealing with us through the Internet:

Online security: If you buy something with your credit card from us, you can safely enter your entire credit card number via our secure server, which encrypts all submitted information. Fameo secure server software (SSL) is the industry standard and among the best software available today for secure commerce transactions. Fameo website (www.fameo.co.uk) is tested regularly to ensure that high security standards are maintained. Fameo website is 100% compliant with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), and has been independently certified by SecurityMetrics, Inc. Your rights: If you buy something with your credit card from us, you have the same rights as if you went in and paid over the counter in cash. In fact, you have some extra rights, including a cooling off period, so if you don´t like something you can send it back. For more information please refer to our Returns Policy.
Equal liability: If you buy something with your credit card from us and the product is defective, we will replace it according to our Returns or Warranty policies without any questions. However, if the dispute is not resolved, and you have paid between £100 and £30,000 for the product using a credit card, then Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act applies. This means that the card company has equal liability and you can get your money back from them. This would also apply in a situation where no goods are received.
Fraud liability: If you buy something with your credit card from us and you are unlucky enough to experience fraud, and your credit card company holds you liable for any unauthorized charges to your account resulting from your online purchases at Fameo website, we will reimburse any loss you suffer up to the £50 maximum under your credit card company´s liability limits. In practice most banks refund you with the full amount. However, if your card issuer can show that you have acted fraudulently or without reasonable care, you may be liable for all losses on the card. A common example of acting without reasonable care is writing down your PIN and storing it with your card.

Paying by Visa, MasterCard and JCB cards online

In addition to your credit card number, expiration date and cardholder´s name we will ask you to provide us CVV number, billing address (if different from the delivery address) and your land line telephone number during the order checkout.

CVV (Visa) and CVC2 (MasterCard) stand for Card Verification Value. It is a three-digit number imprinted on the signature panel of cards. It is an anti-fraud feature of your credit card that is used for transactions where the card is not shown in person. By requiring the CVV, we can verify that you are in possession of your card.

If you can´t find or can´t read CVV, then leave the CVV field on the order form blank. Our processor makes a decision whether to accept or decline your card and if there is an issue, then we will contact you directly to discuss.

Billing address must exactly match your credit card billing address because we are using AVS (Address Verification System) which attempts to match the billing address that you entered in the billing address fields during checkout with the address information on file with the card issuing bank. This is done for both your and our protection against fraud.

A landline telephone number is required in some cases. The main reason for this is related to security and in the event that we encounter issues regarding payment details or delivery addresses, we will contact you on this number to clarify the situation.

Paying by Visa, MasterCard and JCB cards online

In addition to your credit card number, expiration date and cardholder's name we will ask you to provide us a CID number, billing address (if different from the shipping address) and your landline telephone number during the order checkout. You may also be required to call American Express and authorize the charge by Fameo for the total amount of your order.

CID stands for Card Identification Digits. It is a four-digit verification number on the front of your card above the credit card number on either the right or the left side of your card. This allows American Express to verify that the number given matches your records, helping to protect your account from fraudulent use.

Billing address must exactly match your credit card billing address because we are using AVS (Address Verification System) which attempts to match the billing address that you entered in the billing address fields during checkout with the address information on file with the issuing bank. This is done for both your and our protection against fraud.

American Express Fraud Detection system watches your account for uncharacteristic or unusually high charges and if it detects unusual activity on your card (such as an expensive jewellery purchase at Fameo website), it may suspend further charges until you confirm that purchase is authorized by calling American Express customer support number.

Alternative ways to submit your credit card details

We have a way for you to use your credit card without ever having to enter the complete number on the Internet. During the order checkout simply select "Pay by Fax" option. This gives us a way to track your order but guarantees you an additional layer of security and peace of mind. Then fax us your credit card number, expiration date, cardholder´s name and CVV or CID number to: 0800 471 5001. Remember to include your order reference number along with card details on the fax.
